Your host Alan Cairns also works as a wildlife and scenic photographer. The following photos have been all been taken from the garden which meets the shoreline in front of the house.
Once the deep water port for Dumfries, Carsethorn is steeped in history and is the perfect location for exploring this hidden south west corner of Scotland. Thousands of people emigrated from Carsethorn to Australia, Canada and the States on sailing ships which moored at the old pier situated at the foot of the beach garden. Many were held at the barracks in the village, before being deported against their will, for petty crimes. Some of the houses in Carsethorn have cellars which were used to hide smuggled goods such as tea, silk and brandy. Several Inns and two houses of ill repute kept the many travellers passing through happy. Today Carsethorn is sleepy in comparison but offers an ideal base for those wishing to escape the bustle of life.
